What is the best local product to kill shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles appearing in the grout between the tiles above our shower in Silicon Oasis. It's been so humid lately that the bathroom wall never feels completely dry. What's the most effective product I can find locally to safely kill this and stop it from coming back?

The black speckles you're describing in Silicon Oasis are a classic case of mould growth, a very common issue in Dubai bathrooms due to our extreme humidity and the constant cycle of hot showers and year-round air conditioning leading to condensation. The grout is porous, absorbing moisture and providing an ideal food source for mould spores.

For a localized, surface-level issue, you can use a locally available, EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner. Look for products containing chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. Brands like Dettol Mould & Mildew Remover or Clorox Bleach Gel are effective. Apply it directly to the grout, allow it to dwell for the recommended time (usually 10-15 minutes), and scrub with a stiff brush. Always ensure the area is well-ventilated during application.

However, it is critical to understand that these products only address the visible growth on the surface. The mould's hyphae (root structures) can penetrate deep into the grout and even behind the tiles. In a climate like Dubai's, if the underlying moisture issue—primarily the lack of proper ventilation—is not resolved, the mould will return persistently.

For a lasting solution, the bathroom must be dried out. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. If the growth is extensive, has a musty odour, or if you suspect it has spread behind the tiles, this is no longer a DIY job. Disturbing it improperly can aerosolize spores and contaminate other areas.

In such cases, a professional inspection is mandated to assess the extent of the infestation. We use specialized tools like moisture meters and borescopes to check cavities. Our remediation protocols follow Dubai Municipality and NIOSH guidelines to safely contain, remove, and treat the area with industrial-grade antimicrobial solutions, ensuring it does not recur.
