Is black shower mold causing our sore throats?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black for a couple of months now, and no matter how much I scrub, it comes right back. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I'm starting to get worried, especially for my toddler who takes baths in there. We're in an older building in Deira and I'm not sure if the ventilation is strong enough. What's the most effective way to permanently get rid of this mold and is it likely the cause of our sore throats?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the persistent nature of the black discoloration in your Deira bathroom, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a mold issue, and it is a likely contributor to the scratchy throats you and your toddler are experiencing. The black growth is typically Cladosporium or Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), which releases mycotoxins and spores that are known respiratory irritants, especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

The climate in Dubai is a significant factor. Year-round air conditioning creates drastic temperature differentials between cool indoor air and the warm, humid outdoor environment, leading to intense condensation within wall cavities and on cold surfaces like tiles. Older buildings in Deira often have undersized or inefficient bathroom exhaust systems that cannot handle this moisture load, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. Scrubbing surface growth is ineffective as the mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates deep into the porous grout and potentially behind the tiles.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is crucial. We would conduct a visual assessment and air quality testing to identify the exact species and spore concentration, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation protocol as per UAE health and safety guidelines. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration, applying professional-grade antimicrobial agents to eradicate the root system, and addressing the underlying moisture source, which is often inadequate ventilation.

Given the health symptoms and the vulnerability of a toddler, I strongly recommend you cease using the shower and seek a professional evaluation immediately.
