How to treat moldy leather and prevent closet moisture?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting patches of black mold on the leather bags and shoes we store in there. It's been ridiculously humid the last few weeks and even though the AC is always on, that corner just feels damp and cold. What's the best way to treat the items we have and is there a specific dehumidifier or moisture absorber you'd recommend for a small enclosed space like this to stop it from coming back?

As a certified mold remediation specialist in Dubai, treating moldy leather in a high-humidity environment like a closet requires immediate and specific action. First, remove all affected items from the contaminated space to prevent further exposure and cross-contamination. For mold on leather goods, gently clean the surface with a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% distilled water, applied with a soft, lint-free cloth. Never use bleach or excessive water, as this can damage the leather. Allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated, dry area away from the humid closet before assessing if further conditioning or professional restoration is needed.

The core issue is the micro-climate within the closet. Dubai's extreme humidity, combined with year-round AC, creates significant temperature differentials on exterior walls, leading to condensation—a perfect breeding ground for mold. Simply running the AC is not sufficient for an enclosed, unventilated space.

For a small enclosed closet, I recommend using a compact, electric desiccant dehumidifier, as they are more effective than refrigerant models in the UAE's consistently high temperatures. Alternatively, use disposable moisture absorber pods containing calcium chloride, which are excellent for confined areas. However, these are a temporary fix.

The persistent dampness suggests a potential condensation issue that requires professional assessment. We must identify if there is inadequate insulation in the external wall or if the AC airflow is insufficient to that corner. I strongly recommend a professional inspection to determine the root cause. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint moisture sources and provides UAE-standard compliant remediation.
