Can I remove black shower mold myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's a windowless bathroom and the smell gets pretty damp if we don't run the exhaust fan for ages after a shower. Is this something I can tackle myself with a product from ACE Hardware, or is it time to call in a professional cleaner?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of bathroom mold growth, extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation issues in poorly ventilated spaces like a windowless bathroom.

The black spots in the grout are likely Aspergillus niger or possibly Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold), both of which thrive in the damp, warm, and dark conditions you've described. While small, superficial surface mold can sometimes be addressed by a diligent homeowner using a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a supplier like ACE, your situation suggests a deeper issue. The persistent damp smell indicates that moisture is being absorbed into the porous grout and potentially the substrate behind the tiles. DIY cleaning with bleach or vinegar often only removes the surface discoloration, leaving the root system (hyphae) intact, leading to rapid regrowth.

For a 2-year established growth in a high-moisture environment, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to determine if the moisture has penetrated behind the wall, which would require remediation beyond simple cleaning. In the UAE, professional mold remediation must adhere to strict guidelines to ensure complete removal and prevent cross-contamination.

To properly address this and ensure it doesn't return, I advise calling our team for a comprehensive inspection. We can identify the full extent of the problem and provide a permanent solution. Please contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
