Is closet mold urgent to treat professionally in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has started to feel damp, and I just pulled out a winter jacket to find a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the back wall and on a couple of leather bags. This has probably built up over the last few weeks since we stopped using the AC as much. Given how humid it's getting already, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

The presence of mold in a closet in Jumeirah Village Circle is a situation I would classify as urgent and requiring professional assessment. The high ambient humidity in Dubai, even outside of peak summer, creates a perfect environment for rapid mold proliferation. What you see on the surface is often just the fruiting body; the root system (hyphae) can penetrate deep into porous materials like drywall and wood, which DIY methods like vinegar cannot eradicate.
The dampness you feel is likely due to condensation, a common issue when AC usage is reduced, allowing warm, humid air to penetrate cooler, stagnant spaces like closets. This creates a microclimate ideal for mold. Treating it yourself risks inadequate remediation, leading to rapid regrowth and potential health issues from airborne spores, as well as cross-contamination to other areas of your apartment. In the UAE, professional remediation is governed by strict guidelines, such as the DM Guidelines and Dubai Municipality standards, which mandate specific containment, air filtration (using HEPA scrubbers), and antimicrobial treatment protocols to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. A certified inspector will also identify and address the underlying moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. For a situation like this, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation.
