Can I remove bedroom mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's because of the black mold that's spreading on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet here in our Jumeirah villa. It started as a small patch after the heavy dew we had last month but now it's getting bigger and the musty smell is really strong. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE Hardware, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company for this, and roughly how much would that cost for a single room?

Based on the symptoms you've described—persistent coughing in children and a spreading, musty-smelling black mold patch—I strongly advise against a DIY remediation attempt. This is a serious situation that warrants a professional inspection and remediation plan.

In the UAE's humid climate, particularly in areas like Jumeirah with high humidity and constant AC use, what appears as surface mold on a ceiling is almost always a symptom of a more significant moisture issue, such as condensation within the AC ducting or a leak in the roof or slab. The mold you see is merely the fruiting body; the root system (hyphae) is likely deeply embedded within the building material. Using bleach from a hardware store is ineffective. It may temporarily lighten the visible stain but will not address the root cause or the hidden infestation. More critically, disturbing the mold during cleaning will release a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins into your home's air, potentially exacerbating your children's respiratory issues.

The persistent cough is a significant red flag indicating exposure to poor indoor air quality. For the health of your family and to ensure the structural integrity of your villa, a professional assessment is essential. We at Saniservice would perform a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination. Remediation cost for a single room can vary based on the severity and root cause but typically starts from AED 2,500 for a proper containment, removal, and hygienization process.
