Black mold from AC leak: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the living room, and now I’m seeing a bunch of small black spots spreading out from the vent. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub from Ace Hardware, or is it time to call in one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black spots spreading from an AC vent onto damp carpet in Jumeirah—this is a classic case of mold growth fueled by Dubai's high humidity and condensation issues. The leak provides the moisture, and our climate provides the perfect humid environment for proliferation.

While a small, surface-level spot on a non-porous material might be addressed with a detergent clean, your situation is different. The mold is likely growing within the carpet fibers and the underlying padding, which are porous materials. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces as it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the roots (hyphae). Furthermore, disturbing it with DIY scrubbing can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your villa and posing potential health risks.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is governed by strict hygiene and environmental standards. A professional assessment is critical. We would conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination, both visible and hidden within the AC system itself.

For a situation involving HVAC systems and carpet, I strongly recommend calling in a professional remediation company like Saniservice. Our certified technicians use industry-grade equipment, including HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents, to safely contain, remove, and hygienize the affected area, ensuring the problem is resolved at its source and your indoor air quality is restored.

Do not risk your health or allow the problem to worsen. For a definitive assessment and solution, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
