Black mold on humid bedroom wall: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles appearing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s a wall that faces the outside and the room always feels more humid than the rest of the apartment, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or is it time to just call the building management?

Based on your description of a consistently humid external wall in Jumeirah with black speckling behind a wardrobe, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold colony. The combination of Dubai's high ambient humidity, a cold surface (the external wall), and stagnant air (caused by the wardrobe) creates a perfect environment for condensation and subsequent mold growth, typically of the Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold) variety.

For a case like this, a DIY approach is not recommended and could be ineffective or even hazardous. Cleaning the visible speckles with a detergent will not address the root cause—the ongoing moisture issue within the wall cavity. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and personal protective equipment (PPE) also poses a health risk.

Your first official step should be to formally notify your building management or landlord in writing. According to UAE rental law, the landlord is typically responsible for the maintenance of the structural integrity of the property, which includes addressing moisture ingress from external walls. They must investigate and rectify any potential construction defects or leaks that are causing the dampness.

However, building management will rarely conduct the specialized testing and remediation required. This is where professional intervention is critical. A certified mold inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration of mold, use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion, and provide a detailed protocol for safe, effective remediation.

Given the persistent humidity and the location, I strongly advise against a DIY solution. For a proper assessment and a permanent fix, you should contact a professional service. I recommend calling Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. Their certified technicians can diagnose the exact cause and provide a compliant remediation solution to ensure your home is safe and healthy.
