How to treat and prevent mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been super humid the last month and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading and how can we prevent it from coming back since we keep all our clothes in there?

Based on the description, you are likely dealing with a classic case of surface mold caused by high humidity and poor air circulation, a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially during the humid summer months and in closets on interior walls where cool air from AC units doesn't reach.

For immediate, contained surface mold on a non-porous surface, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary mold removal cleaner can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, it is critical to understand that this only addresses the visible growth. The underlying moisture issue must be resolved, or the mold will return rapidly.

Prevention is paramount in the UAE. The constant use of air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between rooms and inside closets, leading to condensation. To prevent recurrence, you must improve ventilation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly and set to a consistent temperature to reduce condensation. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like those containing calcium chloride crystals) inside the closet. Never store damp or wet clothing.

For any mold covering an area larger than one square meter, or if you suspect it has penetrated the wallboard or is causing health symptoms, DIY methods are insufficient and potentially hazardous. According to UAE standards, proper remediation requires containment, professional-grade antimicrobial agents, and HEPA filtration to safely remove spores.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection to assess the extent and identify the precise moisture source. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters for accurate diagnosis.
