Mold behind toy chest caused child's cough - emergency steps?« Back to Previous Page

Our 3-year-old has been having a persistent cough for the last few weeks, and we can't seem to shake it. I just pulled his toy chest away from the wall in our nursery in Jumeirah and found a patch of black mold behind it, probably from humidity. I'm really worried about his health and if this is the cause. What are the immediate steps I should take to clean this safely and should I take him to a specific type of doctor here in Dubai to get checked out?

Based on the symptoms and your discovery, it is highly plausible that the mold exposure is contributing to your child's persistent cough. The humid climate in Dubai, combined with condensation from year-round AC use and poor air circulation behind furniture, creates a perfect environment for mold growth, particularly in areas like Jumeirah.

Your first step is to isolate the area. Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself with bleach or other household cleaners, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the contamination. Move your child and all family members to a different, well-ventilated part of the home. For a small patch, a professional hygienization service can safely remediate the area using HEPA-vacuuming and EPA-approved antimicrobial agents, ensuring spores are contained and not spread throughout the nursery.

However, given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg; the root cause could be a hidden moisture issue within the wall or under the flooring that needs to be identified and rectified to prevent recurrence. We operate in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and environmental safety regulations.

You should take your child to a pediatrician or a specialist in pediatric pulmonology or allergology at any major hospital in Dubai. Inform them of the potential mold exposure. They can assess for allergies or other respiratory irritations.
