Can I clean AC mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for a couple of weeks now, and I just pulled the filter to find black spots all over the inside of the unit. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray or do I need to call a professional AC cleaning service?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a persistent damp smell, visible black spots inside the unit, and health effects like a stuffy nose—this is a strong indicator of a significant mold contamination within your AC system. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create constant condensation, this is a common but serious issue.

While a surface clean of the filter might seem like a DIY task, using bleach spray inside the AC unit is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like insulation and can corrode delicate aluminum coils and electronic components. More critically, it does not address the root cause: the moisture source within the system. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can also aerosolize spores, spreading contamination throughout your bedroom and ductwork.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. We follow strict protocols based on UAE health and safety guidelines. The process involves a full inspection to identify all contaminated areas, isolating the unit with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, using EPA-approved biocides to safely eliminate the mold colony, and applying a protective coating to inhibit future growth. Crucially, we also diagnose and rectify the underlying moisture issue, such as a clogged condensate drain pan or line, which is often the real problem.

Given the health symptoms, we recommend you cease using the bedroom AC immediately and contact a certified professional. For a thorough inspection and safe remediation, you can reach our specialists at Saniservice by calling 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com.
