Should I remove mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the Marina apartment has started showing these black speckles, and it's been spreading since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just came back darker. Given how common this seems to be here, is this something I can tackle myself with stronger stuff from ACE, or should I just call a professional mold removal company straight away?

Based on your description of a recurring mold issue in a Marina apartment, my professional recommendation is to call a certified professional immediately.

Attempting DIY removal, especially with vinegar, is a common mistake. Vinegar's acidity is insufficient to kill the mold roots and can actually provide a moisture source, causing it to return more aggressively, as you've experienced. Stronger, off-the-shelf biocides from ACE are not only hazardous to handle without proper PPE but are also a temporary fix. They address the visible growth but not the underlying moisture source, which in Dubai is a constant battle due to our extreme humidity, condensation from year-round AC use, and the saline air in coastal areas like Marina.

The black speckles indicate active colonization. Spores will have spread behind the wall, contaminating the cavity. Proper remediation requires specialized equipment: HEPA-contained air scrubbers to create negative pressure and capture airborne spores, industrial dehumidifiers to address the latent humidity, and antimicrobial agents applied by certified technicians. Furthermore, Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for environmental remediation to ensure occupant safety and proper disposal of contaminated materials.

For a persistent problem like this, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We need to identify the exact moisture source—be it a micro-leak in the wall, thermal bridging causing condensation, or AC drip pan overflow—and eliminate it before remediation begins.
