Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Mirdif. It must have been growing there for a while, hidden from view. We run the AC constantly but it’s a small room with no windows. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this situation requires a professional assessment and almost certainly professional remediation. The combination of visible black mold, a history of persistent AC use in a small, unventilated room, and associated health symptoms in children is a significant concern.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a visible colony, indicating a much larger, established mold ecosystem within the wall cavity and potentially the AC unit itself, which is actively releasing spores into the air your family breathes. The constant AC use in Dubai's humid climate creates a perfect storm: the cold surfaces of walls behind furniture cause condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive. Bleach and vinegar are surface-level solutions; they cannot address the root moisture problem or remove deeply ingrained hyphae (the root system of the mold). Disturbing it yourself without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing exposure and contaminating other areas of your home.

In the UAE, professional remediation is governed by strict standards like the Abu Dhabi Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHAD) Code of Practice and Dubai Municipality guidelines. We follow these to ensure complete removal, not just cleaning. This involves isolating the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely removing contaminated porous materials (like drywall), HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents. Crucially, we identify and rectify the source of moisture—often a leaking AC drain line or inadequate insulation causing condensation.

Given the health symptoms and the hidden nature of the growth, a DIY approach is not safe or effective. I strongly recommend you cease using the room and contact a certified professional immediately for an inspection.
