Should I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found a bunch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Marina apartment. It's a pretty big patch, maybe two feet wide, and the wall feels damp. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaning spray from Ace Hardware, or should I call a professional mold removal company and what would that roughly cost for a job like this?

Based on the symptoms you describe—persistent coughing in children and a significant (two-foot) patch of black mold on a damp wall—I strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend immediate professional inspection and remediation. The dampness indicates an active moisture source, which is common in Marina due to high humidity, sea air, and condensation from year-round AC use. Simply spraying the visible growth with a store-bought cleaner will not address the root cause, and the mold will almost certainly return.

In the UAE, improper handling can violate regulations set by Dubai Municipality and other authorities, which have specific guidelines for mold assessment and remediation to protect public health. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration, as required by IICRC standards, can aerosolize toxic spores, significantly worsening indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating respiratory issues like your children's coughing.

For a patch of this size and given the health symptoms present, a professional assessment is critical. A certified inspector will identify the exact species of mold (crucial as some types, like Stachybotrys, are toxigenic) and use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the full extent of the moisture intrusion. Remediation typically involves source identification, containment, HEPA filtration, removal of contaminated materials, and antimicrobial treatment. For a localized area behind a wardrobe, the cost for professional remediation can range from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the severity and required repairs.

Do not risk your family's health. For a certified inspection and a definitive solution, I recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
