Can I clean black shower mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the grout in the corner of our master bathroom shower. It’s in a shaded part of the en-suite that doesn't get much sun. The AC is always on but it’s been extra humid lately. How quickly do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a spray from the supermarket?

Based on the conditions you've described—persistent humidity, an AC-cooled but shaded en-suite, and visible growth on grout—this is a common yet concerning issue in Dubai bathrooms. While superficial mildew on a non-porous surface can sometimes be addressed with a specialized超市 cleaner, your situation likely requires more attention.
The black spots indicate a moisture problem that is being exacerbated by our climate. Year-round AC creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation in less-ventilated areas like shower corners. The grout is porous, meaning mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate deep below the surface, making a surface spray ineffective as a long-term solution. DIY cleaning often just bleaches the visible top layer, leaving the root structure intact to regrow quickly, sometimes spreading spores to new areas. For a two-year-old growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We would assess the extent of the contamination, identify the specific species of mold (as some types are more hazardous than others), and use moisture meters to check for hidden dampness within the walls. Remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents and sealing techniques to prevent recurrence, which DIY methods cannot provide.
