How to stop AC mold from spreading in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks and now I can see a small black spot of mold forming in the corner near the wall. I’m worried it will spread before the maintenance guys can come. What’s the best thing I can do myself right now in this Dubai humidity to stop it from getting worse?

As a certified mold remediation specialist operating in Dubai, your immediate action is crucial to mitigate the spread given our high humidity and constant AC use. The black spot indicates active growth, likely Cladosporium or Stachybotrys, which thrives on damp cellulose in carpet backing.

First, address the moisture source immediately. Turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker to prevent further leakage and electrical hazard. Soak up all standing water with absorbent towels; press firmly to extract moisture from the carpet pad beneath. For the visible mold, do not attempt to scrub it, as this will aerosolize spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and distilled water (do not use bleach, as it can exacerbate the problem in our climate and is ineffective on porous surfaces). This will help suppress active growth temporarily.

Crucially, you must drastically lower the local humidity to prevent further sporulation. Place a powerful dehumidifier in the closed room immediately. Run it continuously, aiming to maintain humidity below 50%, which is critical in Dubai's external conditions. Increase air circulation with fans pointed at the wall and carpet, but ensure they are not blowing directly onto the mold spot to avoid cross-contamination.

It is vital to understand that this is a containment measure, not a remediation. The leak has likely saturated the carpet pad and potentially the wall cavity, creating a reservoir for hidden mold that will inevitably return. DIY solutions are temporary in this environment.

For a permanent solution, you require professional assessment and remediation. We use thermal imaging to map moisture saturation and conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, as per Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines. I strongly recommend you call our team at Saniservice for an emergency inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Our certified technicians will provide a comprehensive protocol to safely remove the contaminated materials and restore a healthy indoor environment.
