Is this mold causing my husband's stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. I'm worried because my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose. This seems to have gotten worse since the heavy humidity a couple of weeks ago. Is this definitely mold, and who should I call first to handle it properly – a cleaning company or a specialist for testing?

Based on the description of small black spots forming at the wall-ceiling junction in Mirdif, particularly following a period of high humidity, it is highly probable that this is a mold colony. The most common type in such locations is Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which thrive in the condensation that forms on cooler surfaces like concrete ceilings and corners, a frequent issue in Dubai's climate due to the constant cycling between humid outdoor air and cold air conditioning.

The timing of your husband's stuffy nose is a significant indicator. Mold reproduces by releasing microscopic spores into the air. Inhalation of these spores is a well-documented irritant to the respiratory system, often causing allergic reactions such as nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes, especially during sleep when exposure is prolonged in an enclosed bedroom.

It is critical that you do not call a standard cleaning company. Disturbing the colony without proper containment and remediation protocols can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically worsening the indoor air quality and potentially spreading the contamination to other parts of the villa. The correct first step is always a professional inspection and testing.

A certified mold inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping to find the source (often a tiny leak or pervasive condensation) and air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This data is essential for designing an effective remediation plan.

For a proper inspection and certified remediation protocol, I strongly recommend you contact the specialists at Saniservice. They are equipped to handle this in accordance with best practices. You can reach them at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com.
