Is black mold behind wardrobe an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found what looks like black mold spreading along the base of the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived here in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, like is it a call-the-landlord-right-now emergency or can it wait a few days for a contractor?

Based on your description, this situation should be considered urgent and warrants immediate attention. The persistent coughing in your children is a significant red flag, strongly suggesting exposure to mold spores, which is a known respiratory irritant and allergen. The location behind the wardrobe in Jumeirah is a classic scenario; the combination of Dubai's high humidity, especially at night, and the lack of air circulation behind large furniture creates a perfect incubator for Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) and other species.

This is a health risk that should not be delayed. I recommend you call your landlord today to inform them of the issue. Under Dubai's rental regulations, landlords are typically responsible for addressing structural dampness and mold issues that are not a direct result of tenant negligence. Document the mold with photos and your communication with the landlord.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your bedroom and home, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially contaminating other areas. The remediation process requires professional assessment, containment using negative air pressure, specialized HEPA filtration, and the correct antimicrobial agents for complete eradication.

Given the symptoms and visible growth, you need a professional inspection and remediation plan immediately. I strongly advise you to contact a certified specialist. For a professional assessment and swift remediation, you can call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They can accurately identify the mold species, assess the moisture source, and execute a safe, effective cleanup to protect your family's health.
