Black mold in closet from bathroom humidity: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It’s right next to the bathroom and I think the humidity from our showers is getting trapped in there, especially with the recent weather making everything feel damp. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning service here in Dubai immediately?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold proliferation due to localized high humidity and condensation, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high ambient humidity and year-round AC use create significant temperature differentials. The black, fuzzy growth is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, which should not be handled without proper PPE.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a HEPA vacuum and an EPA-approved fungicide, your situation requires a professional assessment. The spread along the ceiling indicates a significant moisture issue, possibly from a small leak in the bathroom plumbing or, more likely, persistent condensation within the wall or ceiling cavity. DIY attempts often disturb the mold, releasing a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins into your living space, which can exacerbate health risks.

In the UAE, professional mold remediation is governed by strict health and safety standards (UAE.S 5019:2015) to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, then implement containment protocols, advanced HEPA filtration (air scrubbers), and antimicrobial applications to remediate the source.

For a case like this, with visible spreading, I strongly recommend against a DIY approach. Contact a professional service immediately for an inspection. Our team at Saniservice is certified and equipped to handle this safely. We can be reached at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment and remediation plan.
