Is this mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's because of the black spots I found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed this after moving the furniture to clean. Is this type of mold dangerous, and should I be taking them to a doctor or just calling a professional cleaner first?

Based on your description of black spots discovered behind a wardrobe in a Jumeirah apartment, it is highly plausible that your children's persistent cough is related to mold exposure. The confined, poorly ventilated space behind large furniture is a classic breeding ground for mold, especially in Dubai's climate where high external humidity meets year-round air conditioning, leading to significant condensation issues.

The type of mold is a critical factor. While not all molds are toxigenic, the presence of black discoloration often raises concern for Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly called "black mold"), which can produce mycotoxins linked to respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and other health effects, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing. However, visual identification is insufficient; only professional laboratory analysis of a sample can confirm the species and its potential hazard.

Your first action should be to avoid disturbing the area further, as this can release a high concentration of spores into the air. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach or other household products, as this can aggravate the problem and is ineffective at addressing the root cause.

Given the health symptoms and the potential for a serious infestation, I strongly recommend a two-pronged approach:
1. Consult a pediatrician to address your children's health concerns and inform them of the potential mold exposure.
2. Contact a professional mold inspection company immediately.

Our team at Saniservice specializes in UAE-specific mold issues. We conduct a comprehensive inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the problem and the source of moisture, followed by air and surface sampling to identify the mold species. This evidence-based approach is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, which must be performed to strict standards to ensure the environment is safe again.
