Black mold on wall in Dubai: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has this weird black speckling spreading up from the skirting board. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and I think it started after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve only just moved the furniture to see it properly. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai – should I call a professional company or is there a specific product I can get from ACE to tackle it myself?

Based on your description of black speckling spreading from the skirting board in your Jumeirah villa, this is a classic presentation of mold growth, almost certainly exacerbated by the recent high humidity. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity conflicts with year-round air conditioning, condensation forms on cooler surfaces like exterior walls and behind furniture, creating the perfect environment for mold.

For a small, isolated area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be considered. You can purchase a EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store like ACE. However, simply wiping the visible growth is insufficient. You must identify and address the moisture source, which is likely condensation from the temperature differential or a potential hidden leak in the wall. DIY methods often fail to address the root cause and can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination.

Given that the mold is already "spreading," a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol. This is not just about cleaning; it's about creating a healthy indoor environment. Improper handling can violate Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines regarding indoor air quality.

For a definitive solution that guarantees the mold is removed at its source and the underlying moisture issue is resolved, calling a professional is the safest and most effective course of action.
