Can I clean closet mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might be mold. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution from Spinney's, or is it time to call in a professional?

Based on the conditions you've described, this is a common issue we encounter in Dubai. The combination of high ambient humidity, especially during the summer months, and the constant use of air conditioning can create significant condensation in cooler, stagnant spaces like closets, which is a perfect breeding ground for mold.

For a few small spots on a non-porous surface (like the painted wall or the closet shelf itself), a DIY approach can be attempted. A vinegar solution can be effective against some mold species. Use a concentration of at least 80% white vinegar. Lightly spray the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and wipe clean. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Ensure the AC is servicing that room adequately and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel in the closet.

However, I must advise caution. "Black spots" can sometimes indicate Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that should not be disturbed without proper containment. More importantly, if the mold has penetrated the porous drywall or the backing of the closet, surface cleaning is only temporary and the root problem will recur. The use of bleach is strongly discouraged as it can aggravate the situation and is not permitted under professional remediation guidelines.

For a definitive answer on the mold type and the extent of the problem, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging to identify hidden moisture and air quality tests to determine spore counts and species. This is the only way to guarantee the issue is resolved safely and completely, protecting your health and your property.
