How to remove closet mold and prevent humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot since winter, and I just found a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter blankets. This is in our villa in Jumeirah, and I’m worried the humidity from the air at night is getting trapped in there. What’s the best way to clean this and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I put in the closet to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description of the location (Jumeirah villa), the symptoms (coughing), and the visible black spots in the closet, it is highly advisable to proceed with caution. The combination of high humidity from Dubai's climate and the organic material in winter blankets creates an ideal environment for mold, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or Aspergillus niger. These are known respiratory irritants.

For the small, visible growth, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary mold removal cleaner can be used on non-porous surfaces. However, given the potential health risks to your children, we strongly recommend against DIY cleaning. Disturbing the mold can aerosolize spores and mycotoxins, exacerbating respiratory issues. The underlying moisture problem must be addressed first.

The root cause is condensation and trapped humid air, a common issue in Dubai villas where year-round AC use can create significant temperature differentials and condensation points inside closets on exterior walls. For prevention, a small, portable desiccant dehumidifier or rechargeable moisture absorber pods (like those from DampRid) are essential inside the closet. More critically, you must improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and ensure your villa's AC system is properly serviced and maintaining a consistent humidity level below 55%.

For a definitive identification of the mold type, assessment of potential hidden growth inside the wall, and a professional, contained remediation to ensure spores are not spread throughout your home, a certified inspection is mandatory. This is not just a cleaning issue; it's an indoor air quality and health concern.
