Can I remove recurring black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came back within a couple of weeks. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a common yet significant issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which creates massive condensation problems, especially in bathrooms. The fact that the mold is on the ceiling corner—a high point—suggests it is thriving on persistent moisture from steam and poor ventilation, not a one-time leak.

While DIY methods like vinegar or bleach can remove surface discoloration, they are often ineffective for a recurring problem. These solutions do not address the root cause—the moisture source—and more critically, they do not penetrate porous materials like gypsum board (drywall) or grout to kill the hyphae (root structure) of the mold. The rapid return confirms the colony is established within the material itself.

For a proper resolution, a two-step process is essential. First, a professional inspection is needed to identify the exact moisture source, which could be insufficient bathroom ventilation, a breach in the vapor barrier, or even condensation within the AC ductwork serving that room. Second, the remediation must involve the controlled removal of the contaminated porous materials and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence, procedures that require containment to prevent spore dissemination into your living space.

For a health-safe and permanent solution, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cause. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed evaluation and quote.
