Is black mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. With the humidity lately, I think it might be mold. Is this something I can just clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company in Dubai to check the whole villa?

It is very possible that the black spots you've discovered are mold, and this could certainly be contributing to your children's persistent cough. The combination of high ambient humidity in Dubai and the specific microclimate created behind large furniture (like a wardrobe) against a wall is a classic recipe for mold growth. The wall becomes cold from the air conditioning, and when warm, humid air seeps behind the furniture, it condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold spores to colonize.

While some minor surface mold can be addressed by a homeowner, I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface pigment without killing the root system (hyphae) deep within the material. Furthermore, bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold growth after the chlorine evaporates. More critically, attempting to clean significant growth yourself can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins, potentially worsening your family's respiratory symptoms.

Given that there are health symptoms involved, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. Our certified mold inspectors use tools such as moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion and borescopes to assess the extent of growth within wall cavities. Most importantly, we conduct air quality testing to quantify the spore count inside your villa compared to the outside baseline. This data is crucial to determine the severity of the contamination and to formulate a safe, effective remediation plan as per UAE standards.
