How to clean and prevent mold in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been feeling really humid for the past couple of months, and I just found a patch of black, speckled stuff in the back of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. The room is always colder than the rest of the house because we run the AC constantly. What’s the best way to clean this off the wooden shelves and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The black speckled growth you've described is highly indicative of a mold colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or more commonly, Aspergillus niger. This is a direct consequence of the high humidity and condensation prevalent in Dubai's climate, exacerbated by the constant cooling of an AC unit in an enclosed space like a wardrobe. The cold air from the AC causes the warmer, humid air to condense on the cooler wooden surfaces, creating the perfect damp environment for mold proliferation.

For immediate cleaning on a non-porous wooden surface, wearing an N95 mask and gloves is non-negotiable. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary mold-cleaning agent approved for use in the UAE (check for EPA or equivalent certification) is effective. Apply, scrub, and allow it to dry completely. However, this addresses only the surface contamination. The underlying moisture issue must be resolved to prevent recurrence.

Permanent prevention requires a multi-faceted approach. First, address the humidity source. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drainage line is clear to prevent overflow and excess moisture. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid winter months. Improve air circulation within the wardrobe by not overpacking it and by leaving the doors ajar periodically. Silica gel desiccant packs can be placed inside to absorb ambient moisture.

For a confirmed case of black mold, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore type and concentration, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines. Improper handling can aerosolize toxins and spread the contamination.
