Black mold in Dubai closet: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It's definitely worse since the humidity kicked in a few weeks ago, and our clothes are starting to smell a bit damp. What's the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, and at what point should we just call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

The black, fuzzy growth you're describing in your Jumeirah closet is a classic case of mold proliferation, directly fueled by Dubai's high humidity and the microclimate created by year-round air conditioning. The condensation from AC units, combined with limited airflow in a closet, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold spores.

For a small, surface-level contamination (less than 10 square feet), a careful DIY approach may be feasible. Begin by addressing the moisture source; ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in the room. To clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Do not dry brush the mold. Instead, use a solution of detergent and warm water or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide to scrub the affected non-porous surfaces. Dispose of any severely contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes. After cleaning, the area must be thoroughly dried.

However, given the description that it is "spreading" and has caused a persistent damp smell on your clothes, this suggests a more entrenched problem. The mold may have penetrated the wall's substrate (plasterboard/gypsum board) behind the surface. In such cases, DIY cleaning is merely cosmetic and will fail to address the root colony, leading to rapid regrowth.

For persistent, recurring, or widespread mold, professional assessment and remediation are not just recommended but are often required by building management and Dubai Municipality regulations to prevent cross-contamination. Our certified teams at Saniservice use advanced moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the hidden moisture source, then execute containment and removal following IICRC standards, ensuring the mold is eradicated, not just wiped away.

For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution, we strongly advise a professional inspection. Call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
