How to permanently remove and prevent mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few patches of black mold on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. We keep the AC running constantly in our Jumeirah Park villa, but the room always feels more humid than the rest of the house. I'm worried it's going to spread to our clothes. What's the most effective way to get rid of this and prevent it from coming back, aside from just running a dehumidifier?

The mold growth in your closet is a classic symptom of localized high humidity exacerbated by Dubai's climate. Constantly running AC does not guarantee adequate dehumidification, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets on interior walls. The cold air from the AC can lead to condensation on cooler surfaces, creating the perfect microclimate for mold.
To permanently address this, a systematic approach is required. First, the affected items must be professionally cleaned or disposed of, as mold on leather is deeply penetrating. Simply wiping visible growth is insufficient. The closet and room then require a comprehensive inspection to identify the moisture source. This is often due to a lack of air circulation, a slightly negative pressure in the room, or even a minor, concealed plumbing leak in the wall. Effective remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its root. For prevention, we recommend installing a passive ventilation system, such as grilled doors or a small duct to allow conditioned air to circulate. Ensure the AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear, as a blocked line can elevate indoor humidity. Insulating the cold water pipes running inside the wall can also prevent condensation. Given the potential for hidden growth and the strict regulations in the UAE regarding proper biocidal product use, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause.
