How to clean mold behind wardrobe and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah has started showing these dark, speckled patches. It's been insanely humid lately and I think the lack of air circulation behind the furniture caused it. What's the most effective way to clean this off the painted wall and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

The mold growth behind your wardrobe in Jumeirah is a classic symptom of localized high humidity and condensation, exacerbated by Dubai's climate and the lack of air circulation from furniture placement. This stagnant, humid microclimate is a perfect breeding ground for mold, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, though Stachybotrys (true "black mold") is also possible and requires professional handling.

For cleaning, first address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. For surface mold on a painted wall, a solution of detergent and warm water can be effective for minor cases. However, given the porous nature of paint and drywall, the mold may have penetrated beneath the surface. Scrubbing can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination. I strongly advise against using bleach, as it does not address the root cause, can damage surfaces, and its water content can actually feed the mold deeper within the material.

Prevention is critical. You must improve air circulation. Leave a 2-3 inch gap between furniture and walls. A desiccant dehumidifier is the most effective solution for the UAE's high ambient humidity; look for a unit with a capacity suitable for a bedroom (e.g., 10-20 liters/day extraction) with a built-in hygrometer to maintain relative humidity below 55%. Ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly, as it is your primary dehumidification tool.

If the mold covering is extensive (over 1 square meter), has a musty odor, or if you suspect it has grown into the wall, a professional inspection is mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines for safe and effective remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent and execute a containment-based remediation protocol.
