How to remove and prevent closet mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. I’m worried about our clothes and want to get rid of it for good. What’s the best way to clean this and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back since Dubai is so humid?

Based on the location of the mold on an exterior wall in your Jumeirah villa and the climate in Dubai, you are likely dealing with a condensation issue. The temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior causes moisture to condense on the cooler wall surface inside the closet, creating the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a small, localized area, you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of detergent and water is often sufficient for surface mold on non-porous materials. For more persistent growth on porous surfaces like drywall, a solution of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover approved for use in the UAE can be effective. Scrub gently to avoid embedding spores deeper. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem.

The critical step is prevention. First, identify and rectify the moisture source. Improve air circulation within the closet by not overpacking it and leaving space between the wall and your stored items. Consider installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber unit inside the closet. For the wall itself, inspect the exterior for any cracks or gaps that may be allowing humid air to penetrate and seal them. Applying a mold-resistant primer and paint after cleaning can provide a protective barrier.

For a thorough and permanent solution, especially to ensure the structural integrity of the wall and the safety of your belongings, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging to pinpoint exact condensation points and moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation level. Our remediation process includes advanced techniques like dry fogging to eliminate hidden spores within the HVAC system and contents.
