How to control closet moisture in Dubai's humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on the inside wall of our villa in Jumeirah, has started smelling really damp. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored last season and found a few jumpers with dark fuzzy spots on them. With the humidity starting to climb again, I'm desperate to stop this from spreading to everything else. What's the most effective way to control moisture in a closed closet space here in Dubai?

The damp smell and visible mold growth you've described in your Jumeirah villa closet are classic symptoms of a localized humidity issue, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient moisture levels and year-round AC operation. The core problem is likely condensation forming on the cooler interior walls, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold. Your primary goal is to break this cycle of moisture accumulation.

First, immediately remove all affected clothing and contents. Soft goods with visible growth should be professionally cleaned or discarded to prevent spore dispersal. For the closet itself, start by thoroughly cleaning all surfaces with a detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it does not address the root moisture problem and can damage surfaces.

The most effective control is mechanical ventilation and dehumidification. Simply opening the door is insufficient. I strongly recommend installing a battery-operated humidity-activated exhaust fan vented into the room or, ideally, externally. This is a common solution for problematic closets and en-suites here. Alternatively, a compact, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet will actively pull moisture from the air. Ensure there is a slight air gap under the door to allow for air exchange.

Crucially, inspect the adjacent AC vent. A common issue in villas is an oversized AC unit that short-cycles, failing to adequately dehumidify the air. The supply vent should not be directly blowing cold air onto the closet walls, as this will drastically increase condensation.

Given the visible growth, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any hidden issues within the wall cavity. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint condensation sources that are not apparent to the naked eye.
