Landlord or DIY for shower mold in rental apartment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment for a year and just noticed a patch of black mold growing along the sealant where the shower wall meets the floor. It's been extra humid lately and the bathroom ventilation fan seems pretty weak. Is this something I should fix myself with bleach, or is my landlord responsible for handling this kind of repair?

As a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise against a DIY bleach treatment for the mold in your Jumeirah Village Triangle apartment. While it may appear to remove the surface discoloration, bleach is ineffective at killing the mold's roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like grout and sealant. The high humidity and weak ventilation you've described are classic catalysts for mold growth in Dubai's climate, where year-round AC use can create significant condensation issues.

Under Dubai rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are typically responsible for maintaining the property's structure and essential systems, which includes adequate ventilation. A weak extraction fan that fails to manage humidity levels could be considered a maintenance defect. You should formally notify your landlord or property management company in writing about the issue and the insufficient ventilation, requesting a professional remediation.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is crucial. The visible patch is often just the surface manifestation of a larger problem. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to assess the full extent of moisture penetration behind tiles and within walls. Improper handling can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination.

For a definitive assessment and landlord-compliant report, I recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We can provide the necessary documentation to present to your landlord and execute a permanent, professional remediation solution.
