Mold in bedroom causing kids' cough: doctor visit needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I just pulled out a storage box from the back of our built-in wardrobe in the bedroom and found a huge patch of black and green mold on the wall behind it. We’re in an older building in Deira and I’m seriously worried about their health. Is this something I should take them to the doctor for immediately, or will cleaning it fix the problem?

Based on your description, this is a significant health concern that requires immediate action. The proximity of the mold growth to the bedroom, combined with the persistent respiratory symptoms in your children, strongly indicates a causal link. The black and green coloration suggests a potential presence of toxigenic species like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus, which are known to produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that cause chronic coughing, allergic reactions, and other respiratory distress.

Given the duration of symptoms (two weeks), a visit to a pediatrician is highly recommended to address the health effects. Be sure to inform the doctor about the mold exposure. However, a doctor can only treat the symptoms; the root cause—the mold infestation—must be eradicated.

Simply cleaning the visible patch is insufficient and can be hazardous. Disturbing the colony will aerosolize millions of spores, potentially spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and worsening the air quality. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold in poorly ventilated spaces (like the back of a wardrobe), the problem is often more extensive than it appears. The growth likely extends behind the wall, into the insulation, or under the flooring.

This situation requires professional assessment and remediation. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the hidden moisture source and mold growth. Following UAE health and safety guidelines, we then perform containment, professional-grade antimicrobial application, and HEPA filtration to safely remove the biohazard and restore your indoor air quality.
