Should I remove mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has a persistent damp smell in the master bedroom closet, especially after running the AC all day. We pulled out some old storage boxes and found black speckled mold on the back wall and on a few pairs of shoes. I'm worried it's spread further behind the plasterboard. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar, or should I just call a professional company for a proper assessment and quote, and what's a reasonable price range for a job like this?

Based on your description of a persistent damp smell and visible black-speckled mold on the wall and contents within a closet in Al Barsha, my professional recommendation is to call a professional company for a proper assessment and remediation quote.

The climate in Dubai, with its high humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, creates significant condensation issues. This moisture often becomes trapped inside wall cavities, especially on colder exterior walls where the AC unit is mounted. Your suspicion that the mold has spread behind the plasterboard is highly probable. Surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar is a temporary and ineffective solution for several technical reasons: these substances do not address the root moisture problem, their pH can actually feed certain mold types, and they cannot penetrate porous materials like drywall or the wooden studs behind it. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration will only aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your villa.

In the UAE, professional mold remediation involves a certified inspection to determine the full extent of the contamination, moisture mapping to identify the source, followed by engineering controls like negative air pressure containment, HEPA filtration, and the safe removal of affected porous materials. The price for a job of this nature can vary significantly based on the square footage affected and the required scope of work, but for a contained area like a closet, you could expect a professional assessment and remediation to start in the range of AED 2,000 to AED 5,000.
