Black mold in Mirdif villa: DIY clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It must have been growing for a while, hidden behind the boxes. We’re in a villa in Mirdif and I’m worried it’s spread behind the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with cleaning products from Ace Hardware, or should I call a professional company, and what’s the typical cost for a room this size?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection. A large patch of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species) that has been growing unchecked for an extended period, especially in a concealed area like a closet, strongly suggests a persistent moisture issue. In the Mirdif area, this is often caused by a combination of our high ambient humidity and a potential underlying problem, such as a small plumbing leak, capillary rise from the foundation, or condensation within the wall cavity from the year-round AC system.

DIY cleaning with products from a hardware store is not recommended. Surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar will only remove the visible growth and not the root cause or the hidden contamination within the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize harmful mycotoxins and spores, spreading them throughout your villa and HVAC system, significantly escalating the problem and potential health risks.

A certified professional will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly borescope inspections behind the walls, to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to clean the air, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials. For a master bedroom closet, the cost for a complete inspection and remediation can range from AED 2,500 to AED 6,000, depending on the severity and extent of the hidden damage.

Given the potential health risks and property damage, I strongly advise against a DIY approach.
