Can I remove recurring mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in JBR has a bunch of black and greenish spots that have gotten bigger since the humidity kicked in last month. I wiped it with vinegar, but it came back worse in just a couple of days, and now my throat feels a bit scratchy in the mornings. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaners, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

Based on the symptoms you've described—recurring growth after a DIY attempt, visible black and green colonies, and a scratchy throat—this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and remediation. The rapid return and health symptom indicate a potentially serious infestation that surface cleaning cannot address.

The issue in JBR is classic for Dubai. The high humidity, especially during summer months, combined with year-round AC use, creates significant condensation within wall cavities, particularly behind furniture like wardrobes that restrict airflow. Vinegar or bleach-based cleaners only remove surface discoloration; they do not penetrate the porous building materials (like drywall or plaster) to kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. In fact, the moisture from the cleaning attempt can often provide the remaining mold with the water it needs to regrow even more vigorously, which aligns with your experience.

Attempting to use "stronger cleaners" is not advisable. Agitating the area can aerosolize toxic mold spores (like Stachybotrys, the black mold) and mycotoxins, exacerbating respiratory issues and contaminating other areas of your home. Proper remediation requires isolating the area with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and the professional application of EPA-approved biocides that are designed to penetrate and sterilize the substrate.

For your health and to ensure the problem is solved at its source, I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination and provide a definitive remediation plan.
