Mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in a JBR apartment and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been extra humid lately and the AC unit in that room seems to constantly drip. I'm worried about the cost if this is a big job. Is this something I should just clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company, and what's the typical price range for a room this size?

Based on your description, this is a textbook case of a moisture-related mold issue common in Dubai's climate. The constant dripping from the AC unit is the primary culprit, creating a persistent damp environment behind the wardrobe—a perfect breeding ground for mold. The high humidity we experience year-round exacerbates the problem significantly.

While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, your situation requires a professional inspection. The visible black spots are likely just the "bloom" of the colony; the underlying mycelial roots can penetrate deep into drywall and even concrete. Using bleach is a common misconception; it only bleaches the visible pigment and does not kill the root structure, often causing the mold to return stronger. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize harmful spores, spreading the contamination throughout your apartment.

In the UAE, especially in rental properties like those in JBR, identifying and rectifying the source of moisture is critical for both your health and to comply with tenancy responsibilities. A professional assessment is non-negotiable to determine the extent of the damage, identify the mold species, and provide a proper remediation protocol.

For a bedroom of this size, professional mold remediation costs can vary depending on the severity and required containment measures, but you can expect a range from approximately AED 1,500 to AED 4,000 for a proper job that includes source elimination, safe removal, and antimicrobial treatment.

I strongly recommend you contact a certified professional. Our team at Saniservice can provide a precise inspection and quotation. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
