Black mold in closet causing cough: clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall behind the clothes and I think it might have been there for a while, maybe since the humidity got really bad a couple of months ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention and professional consultation. The combination of visible black mold, a persistent moisture source (high humidity), and health symptoms like coughing in children strongly indicates a compromised indoor environment.

In Dubai's climate, the year-round reliance on air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between cooled rooms and warmer wall cavities, leading to condensation—especially in poorly ventilated spaces like closets. This moisture provides the perfect breeding ground for mold, with Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) being a particularly concerning species due to its potential to produce mycotoxins.

While surface cleaning with a detergent solution can remove visible growth, it is a temporary and often insufficient measure. Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall as it does not kill the root system (hyphae) and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture. Vinegar can be slightly more effective but still only addresses the surface. The real concern is the hidden mold within the wall and the underlying moisture issue, which DIY methods cannot diagnose or resolve.

Given the health symptoms, a professional inspection is critical. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to assess the full extent of the contamination and identify the moisture source. Air and surface sampling can then identify the specific species and spore concentration, which is vital for determining the appropriate remediation protocol as per UAE health and safety guidelines.
