Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom. It's been extra humid lately and we keep the AC on most of the time. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

The black spots you're describing behind the wardrobe are a classic symptom of a condensation issue, extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity and the constant use of air conditioning. The wall behind large furniture becomes a cold spot where moisture from the air condenses, creating the perfect damp environment for mold, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, to thrive.
While a small, isolated patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, mixing bleach with other cleaners can produce toxic chloramine gas, a significant health risk. For a surface clean, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a specialized EPA-approved fungicide is safer. However, given the location (a bedroom, a high-occupancy area), the extent ("a bunch of spots"), and the fact it's on a structural wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended. The mold growth you see is often just the surface manifestation; the underlying moisture problem and potential infestation within the wall cavity need to be professionally assessed. Improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other parts of your home.
