Is closet mold urgent for my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it’s the black stuff I just found spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We’ve lived in this villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the recent humidity. How urgent is this? Should I call a professional remediation company immediately or is it something I can handle myself over the weekend?

Based on your description, this situation should be treated as urgent. The presence of a spreading black substance coupled with a persistent cough in children is a significant health concern. What is commonly referred to as "black mold" is often Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic mold that produces mycotoxins. These can become airborne when the mold is disturbed and are known to cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and other allergic reactions, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

The recent humidity in Dubai is almost certainly the catalyst. Our villas, with year-round AC use, are prone to creating condensation hotspots, especially in poorly ventilated, enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls. This condensation provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

Do not attempt to handle this yourself over the weekend. Disturbing the mold colony without proper containment protocols will aerosolize the spores and mycotoxins, potentially spreading them throughout your home and exacerbating your children's symptoms. DIY cleaning with bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and only addresses the surface discoloration, not the root infestation within the wall.

This requires immediate professional assessment and remediation. A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which is critical for determining the correct remediation strategy. In the UAE, professional remediation companies like Saniservice follow strict guidelines to contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove contaminated materials.

For the health of your family, I strongly recommend you call a professional immediately. Contact Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and a plan to resolve this safely and permanently.
