Can I remove black shower mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks and I finally found the source – a bunch of black mold spots in the grout between the tiles near the shower. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but with the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a spray from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai to handle it properly?

Based on the description of black mold spots in the grout and a persistent musty smell, this is a common yet significant issue in Dubai bathrooms. The high ambient humidity, combined with condensation from hot showers and year-round AC use creating thermal bridges, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation.

For a small, surface-level infestation (spots covering less than 10 square feet), a DIY approach can be attempted. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, as bleach only removes the surface color and does not kill the root structure. Scrub the grout lines thoroughly. However, this is often a temporary fix. The musty odor is a key indicator that the mold may be more established than it appears, potentially penetrating the porous grout or even the substrate behind the tiles.

In the UAE, improper remediation can inadvertently contaminate other areas of your home. For recurring mold, a widespread problem, or if the musty odor persists after cleaning, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a failing grout seal, a hidden plumbing leak, or inadequate ventilation—which must be rectified to achieve a permanent solution.

For a definitive diagnosis and a guaranteed remediation, it is best to call a professional. I recommend contacting Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. You can reach our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or via email at hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
