Is hidden bathtub mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the bathtub in our Marina apartment and found a ton of black mold growing underneath it, completely hidden from view. I’m really worried their cough is connected to this. How dangerous is this hidden mold and what’s the fastest way to get it properly cleaned?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the hidden mold growth behind the silicone sealant is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The dark, damp, and enclosed space created by a compromised seal is a classic breeding ground for mold, particularly in Dubai's high-humidity climate where condensation and year-round AC use create significant moisture issues.

The black mold you discovered is likely a type that can produce mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs). When these spores and compounds become airborne—especially during bathroom activities like hot showers—they are easily inhaled. For children, whose respiratory systems are more sensitive, this constant low-level exposure is a common irritant, leading to symptoms like chronic coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions. The fact that it was hidden means the problem has been developing unchecked for some time.

Attempting a DIY removal on this scale is not recommended. Disturbing the mold colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, contaminating your entire apartment and potentially exacerbating the health issues. Furthermore, simply reapplying sealant over the affected area is a temporary fix; the mold will regrow from the roots left behind.

For a situation like this in a Marina apartment, a professional inspection and remediation are critical. We follow strict protocols per UAE health and safety guidelines. This involves isolating the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely removing the contaminated sealant and any affected substrate, employing HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate the root structure, and finally applying a mold-resistant sealant. Our process is designed to not only remove the visible mold but also to address the hidden spores and the underlying moisture problem to prevent recurrence.
