Could black mold in AC be causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks, and I just found what looks like black dust around the air vent in their bedroom. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and it's been so humid lately. Is this black mold and could it be blowing through the AC, making them sick?

Based on your description of a Jumeirah villa, recent high humidity, and black dust around an air vent, there is a very high probability that you are dealing with a mold contamination issue within your AC system. The persistent cough in your children is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores being circulated throughout the room.

In the Dubai climate, where air conditioning runs year-round, condensation constantly forms inside the AC unit and ductwork. This moisture, combined with the dark, enclosed space, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold, particularly Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold). When the AC fan operates, it aerosolizes these spores and mycotoxins, blowing them directly into the living space where they are inhaled. This can cause chronic respiratory irritation, coughing, headaches, and allergic reactions, especially in children.

You should not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can cause a massive release of spores. UAE regulations, particularly from the Dubai Municipality, have specific guidelines for indoor air quality and safe mold remediation to protect occupant health.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, and use a borescope to inspect the interior of your ductwork. Based on the findings, a remediation plan will be created.
