Can I remove black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it's starting to spread onto a few of our shoes. The dehumidifier runs constantly but with the humidity lately, it feels like a losing battle. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the conditions you've described—black mold spreading from a structural corner onto personal items in a high-humidity climate like Dubai—this is a situation that warrants professional intervention. The persistent humidity, even with a dehumidifier running, indicates a significant moisture issue that is actively feeding the mold growth. The location within a closet suggests possible condensation from adjacent AC ducting or a hidden leak, both common issues in UAE properties.

While superficial mold on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution, it is a temporary and often ineffective fix. Bleach does not penetrate porous materials like drywall or the inner structure of shoes, meaning the root system (hyphae) remains and will regrow. For porous materials, complete removal is often the only solution. More critically, DIY attempts can inadvertently aerosolize large quantities of spores, contaminating other areas of your home and posing a health risk.

In Dubai, proper mold remediation is a controlled process. It involves isolating the contaminated area with negative air pressure, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely disposing of unsalvageable porous materials, and applying professional-grade antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root. Crucially, a certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify and resolve the underlying moisture source, which is the only way to prevent recurrence.

Given the spread you've noted, I strongly recommend a professional inspection.
