How to treat black mold in bedroom closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It must have been growing behind the shelves for a while because the musty smell is really strong now. I’m worried it’s because of the high humidity, especially with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself, and should I be calling the building management to check for a leak?

Based on the description of a persistent, strong musty odor and a patch of black mold on an interior wall, this is a significant issue common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and constant AC operation, which can cause condensation. Your first step is absolutely to contact building management immediately. An interior wall leak from a cracked pipe, faulty sealant, or condensation from an AC line is a highly probable cause, and this is their responsibility to investigate under standard tenancy and building regulations in the UAE.

For immediate, temporary containment, you can carefully clean the visible patch. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the affected surface with a spray bottle, let it sit for 15 minutes to kill the surface mold, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with damp cloths and dispose of all cleaning materials. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan.

However, this is only a superficial treatment. The musty odor indicates a deeper, established problem within the wall cavity that you cannot access. Disturbing it can release a large number of spores. Professional inspection is critical to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the full extent of the contamination. DIY methods often fail to address the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth.

For a definitive solution, I recommend a professional assessment. Our company, Saniservice, specializes in using thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden moisture and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations. We can provide a certified remediation plan. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough inspection.
