Can I clean black shower mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grouting between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black and feels slimy, especially in the corners where it's always a bit damp. It's been getting worse over the last month since the weather got more humid. I’m worried it’s mold and I’m not sure if I can just scrub it with bleach myself or if this is something I need to call a professional cleaning service for in Dubai.

Based on the description of black, slimy grout that has worsened with the recent increase in humidity, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold colony. This is a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the condensation created by year-round air conditioning, which creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, particularly in enclosed, damp spaces like showers.

While superficial cleaning with a bleach solution can remove the visible discoloration on the surface, it is often a temporary fix. Bleach is mostly water, and its ionic structure prevents it from penetrating porous materials like grout. This means the bleach kills the surface mold but leaves the root structure (hyphae) intact within the grout, allowing it to regrow quickly. Furthermore, improper use of bleach can pose respiratory irritation risks in a poorly ventilated space.

For a small, surface-level area, you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated, non-bleach, EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, scrubbing thoroughly and ensuring the area is dried completely afterwards with improved ventilation. However, given that the issue is in the grout—a porous material—and has a slimy texture, this indicates significant moisture penetration and established growth.

For a permanent solution, a professional assessment is highly recommended. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to determine the extent of the issue, identify the moisture source (which could be a failing seal or subsurface leak), and prescribe the correct remediation protocol. This often involves specialized antimicrobial agents and sealing techniques to prevent recurrence, ensuring the remediation meets Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards for indoor environments.
