Is closet mold causing my kids' nighttime cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I just noticed small black spots spreading in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store winter clothes. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and it's been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs and what's the safest way to clean it without making them sick?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth in the closet is contributing to your children's nighttime coughing. The combination of an older building in Jumeirah, high ambient humidity, and stored organic materials (winter clothes, often made of wool or cotton) creates a perfect microenvironment for mold proliferation. The constant AC can sometimes contribute to the problem if not properly maintained, as it may cause condensation in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets, rather than adequately dehumidifying the air.

The black spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai's climate, which release spores and mycotoxins into the air. These airborne particles are respiratory irritants, especially during prolonged exposure while sleeping, leading to symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion.

For a small, visible patch (less than 1 square foot), you may carefully clean it yourself using a solution of diluted white vinegar or a proprietary mold cleaner, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given that the mold is already affecting your family's health and is likely growing on porous materials (clothing, drywall), this is a serious case. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and potentially spreading the contamination.

We strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, remediation must follow strict guidelines to ensure spores are contained and air quality is restored. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the full extent of the problem, often finding hidden moisture sources within walls from AC condensate drain leaks or minor seepage, which are common in older villas. We then execute a controlled remediation process with HEPA filtration to ensure your family's safety.
