Black mold in bedroom: DIY clean or call Dubai professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been there for a while because it’s pretty large and the wall feels a bit damp. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity is the cause. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on the description of a large, damp patch of black mold in your Jumeirah bedroom closet, my professional recommendation is to cease any DIY attempts and immediately call for a professional inspection. The presence of persistent dampness and significant fungal growth indicates an underlying moisture issue that simple surface cleaning will not resolve. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, exacerbated by year-round AC use, this is often a symptom of a more serious problem like a concealed condensation issue, a leaking pipe within the wall, or a breach in the building's external waterproofing.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the roots (hyphae) penetrating the material. More critically, it introduces excess moisture, potentially exacerbating the problem. For a confirmed Stachybotrys (black mold) infestation, improper disturbance can aerosolize highly allergenic and potentially toxic mycotoxins, posing a significant health risk to occupants.

Dubai Municipality has stringent regulations for building maintenance and occupant health. A professional remediation company, like ours at Saniservice, is equipped to conduct a comprehensive assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source. The remediation process involves containment of the affected area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safe removal of compromised materials, application of EPA-approved biocides, and finally, verification of clearance through post-remediation testing.

Given the age of your building and the described conditions, a professional approach is not just advisable, it is essential. Please contact our certified team for an immediate assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com.
