Can I clean AC closet mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall and some of our shoes. It’s been slowly getting worse over the past month since the weather got more humid. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a recurring AC leak leading to a spreading patch of black mold on a structural wall—this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and remediation. In Dubai's high humidity climate, what you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the problem. The moisture from the leak has likely penetrated the wall cavity, creating an ideal breeding ground for mold growth that is not visible. Simply wiping the surface with a supermarket bleach solution is ineffective; it may temporarily remove the discoloration but will not address the root moisture problem or the hidden microbial colonies. Bleach is also largely ineffective on porous materials like drywall and shoe leather, and its use can inadvertently release a high concentration of spores into the air.

The persistent humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for condensation and microbial growth. A certified professional will first identify and rectify the source of the AC leak to prevent recurrence. Then, they will conduct a thorough assessment, which may include moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination. The remediation process involves containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination, specialized antimicrobial agents to neutralize the mold, and the safe disposal of unsalvageable porous items like the affected shoes. For a situation involving a structural wall and a continuous moisture source, professional intervention is not just recommended, it is essential for ensuring the health of your indoor environment and the integrity of your property.
