Can I clean black mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Mirdif has been so humid lately and I've just spotted a patch of black fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s been there a while I think, maybe since the weather started changing. I'm worried it might be making my allergies worse. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

While a small, isolated patch of black mold might be tempting to tackle yourself, using bleach is strongly discouraged for several technical reasons, especially in the UAE's humid climate.
Bleach is primarily composed of water. When applied to a porous surface like drywall or the concrete commonly found in Mirdif villas, the water component soaks deep into the material. While the surface may appear clean and white momentarily, the moisture penetrates deeper, creating an ideal environment for the mold roots (hyphae) to regrow even stronger. This often leads to a recurring, and worse, infestation hidden within the wall. Furthermore, bleach is ineffective on porous materials and its fumes are highly irritating to the respiratory system, potentially exacerbating your allergy symptoms. It also fails to address the core issue: the excessive humidity that caused the mold in the first place. The location you describe—a closet against an exterior wall—is a classic spot for condensation issues, which are rampant in Dubai due to the extreme contrast between outdoor heat and year-round AC cooling. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you may carefully clean it with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide, wearing full PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). However, given that the mold is behind boxes and has likely been growing unseen, the extent of the problem is unknown. Spores could have disseminated within the closet and the wall cavity. I highly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination, which is almost always larger than what is visible. For a definitive identification and a remediation plan that includes solving the humidity problem, it is safest to call in experts.
